Will a Photo Shirt Fade? What Actually Happens in the Wash
Print care
Almost everyone has owned a photo shirt that looked great for a month and then started cracking down the middle of someone's face.
That is not bad luck. It is a printing method, and there are three of them in common use. It is worth knowing which one you are buying.
- Iron-on and vinyl crack and peel. DTG ink goes into the cotton, so it cannot crack.
- Wash inside out and cold, skip fabric softener, tumble dry low or hang.
- A slightly lighter print before the first wash is normal pretreatment residue.
- Do that and the print will outlast the collar.
Iron-on transfers
A printed sheet of plastic film pressed onto the fabric with heat. Cheap, fast, and the reason for most of the cracked shirts in the world.
The print sits on top of the shirt as a separate layer. Fabric flexes and stretches; the plastic layer does not flex as much. After enough wash cycles the film gives up, and it fails right where the shirt moves most, across the chest.
You can usually spot it by feel. If the printed area feels like a smooth plastic patch and the shirt does not breathe there, it is a transfer.
Vinyl
Coloured plastic cut into shapes and heat-pressed on. Excellent for team names and numbers, useless for photographs, because it cannot reproduce a gradient. If someone offers you a photograph in vinyl, something has gone wrong.
DTG, which is what we use
Direct-to-garment printing works like an inkjet printer aimed at fabric. The ink goes into the cotton fibres rather than sitting on top of them.
Two consequences follow from that. The printed area feels like the rest of the shirt, because there is no extra layer. And it cannot crack, because there is nothing rigid to crack. It fades slowly over years the way a printed fabric fades, rather than failing suddenly.
DTG is also the only one of the three that reproduces a photograph properly. It handles the subtle tonal steps in skin, fur and shadow that a photo depends on.

How to wash it
Nothing complicated, and all of it is about heat and friction.
- Turn it inside out. The print then rubs against the inside of the drum instead of against the rest of your laundry.
- Wash cold. Cold water is easier on cotton and on ink.
- Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibres and dulls the print over time.
- Tumble dry low, or hang it. High heat is the fastest way to age any print.
- Do not iron the print directly. If you must iron, do it inside out.
Do that and the print will outlast the collar.
The first wash looks different, and that is normal
A new DTG shirt sometimes comes with a very slight pretreatment residue, which can make the print look marginally lighter than expected. It comes out in the first wash and the print settles into the fabric. Nothing has gone wrong.
Where the quality is actually decided
Printing method matters, but the file matters more. A perfect DTG print of a blurry, over-compressed photo is still a blurry shirt.
That is why we prepare every print file by hand rather than sending your upload straight to the printer, and why we contact you before printing if the photo will not hold up. The printer can only reproduce what it is given.
